The images of a flaming offshore oil rig were a powerful rallying cry against exploring for energy on our shores last week.

And photos like this one of the aftermath on the front page of today's New York Times are a formidable PR counterweight to oil and gas companies that spend millions to push their plans into U.S. energy policy.

While the White House just a few weeks ago embraced offshore drilling, it balked in the wake of the Gulf disaster. It's also no coincidence that the Obama administration just threw its support behind a large wind farm off Massachusetts that was opposed by one of the president's political mentors.

"Drill, Baby, Drill" became a rallying cry for proponents of expanding offshore oil and gas exploration in the U.S., but the mounting crisis in the gulf will likely put a large dent in public opinion on the movement.
