Tip of the cap goes to former O'Dwyer's staffer Duncan Boothby for arranging the damaging Rolling Stone profile of McChrystal in which he knocks the leadership of President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.
McChrystal said Biden's counter-terrorism plan would result in "Chaos- istan." Unfortunately, Chaos-istan pretty much sums of the state of Afghanistan.Now the world waits as Obama decides whether to give McChrystal the boot. That would be a powerful "I’m in Charge," statement. Then what? What does the U.S. do after canning the architect of the Afghanistan campaign? It's hard to call for a "do-over" after a nine-year slog.
Obama has said that he is against "nation-building" in Afghanistan. That is exactly what McChrystal has been trying to do, minus any cooperation from the crooked Karzai administration.
The most powerful statement from Obama would be one that announces "Mission Accomplished" in Afghanistan. There is a nice banner somewhere on the USS Lincoln aircraft carrier. Since it was used only once in 2003, it's in great shape.
Afghanistan isn't worth the financial and human costs. McChrystal's Rolling Stone piece is a blessing in disguise for the president. It's a golden opportunity to can both the general and his policy.
