The Coalition for Space Exploration, the aerospace industry-backed group pushing for government involvement in space, has tapped Northrop Gumman’s Lon Rains to bolster its public affairs team.
Glenn Mahoe, VP of communications for Aerojet and a NASA veteran, was upped for a second year-long term in the PA unit.
Rains is sector director of strategic communications for NG’s Aerospace Systems unit in Manhattan Beach, Calif. He was editor of Space News for 15 years.
“We are experiencing a momentum shift that poses both a challenge and an opportunity for the coalition,” said Mahoe, noting the space shuttle is nearing retirement and that a need for “building awareness and enthusiasm” for the U.S. space program “has never been more imperative.”
As the coalition’s PA team, the two executives oversee marketing, comms. and public outreach for the group on one-year terms through December 2011.
The group cites research showing 88% of Americans value the U.S. space exploration program. It recently kicked off a PSA campaign on the value of space exploration.
Griffin Communications Group of Houston handles PR for the coalition.
