Former journalist and legal crisis communications specialist Eileen O’Connor is slated to take over as director of communications and public diplomacy for the U.S. Embassy in Kabul.

O’Connor will take over for David Ensor, another former journalist who was named this month to lead the Voice of America. A State Dept. spokeswoman said O'Connor is expected to be in Afghanistan in about six weeks.
O’Connor, who went to law school after leaving CNN in late 2001, is currently counsel at D.C. law firm McDermott Will & Emery, advising the Dept. of Homeland Security and teaching at Georgetown while contributing to its legal crisis blog. She has worked closely with Lanny Davis since entering the legal arena, following him to MW&E from Orrick Herrington & Sutcliff in 2009.
O’Connor was in journalism for 24 years for ABC and CNN starting in the early 1980s as an overseas producer for ABC News.
Ensor, also a former CNN correspondent who also worked at NPR, exits the embassy after more than a year in the post, a stint that included the WikiLeaks disclosures. He is to join VOA in June, taking over for retiring Danforth Austin.
