Former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf is getting political support in the U.S. from the All Pakistan Muslim League, which has registered on his behalf with the Justice Dept.
The League supports Musharraf’s return to power. The military ruler, who was a staunch ally in President George W. Bush's war on terrorism, resigned the presidency in 2008. He has been living in London and Dubai.
A Pakistani court, last week, issued a warrant for Musharraf’s arrest in connection with the murder of one-time political rival Benazir Bhutto. She died in a bombing after leaving an election rally in 2007.
Musharraf had denied any connection to the Bhutto assassination. He also has promised to return to Pakistan to run for political office.
A United Nations probe of the Bhutto murder blamed Musharraf’s government for failing to provide proper security for her campaign. Two police officers are currently on trial for their alleged role in the bombing.
The League has organized community events and speaking platforms in the U.S. for Musharraf.
