John McDonald, director of operations and hub communications for United Airlines, has booked a ticket for US Airways to head internal and external communications, along with social media.

He fills a slot previously occupied by Jim Olson, a former Waggener Edstrom VP who joined the airline in 2008. The airline has not yet been reached about his status.
US Airways has taken some PR blows in recent industry rankings, including last in Consumer Reports’ recent customer satisfaction rankings and last in JD Power’s rating of major airlines.
“We look forward to his leadership in our ongoing quest to continuously improve our communication with our internal and external audiences,” said Elise Ebewein, executive VP of people, communications and public affairs at the airline, to whom McDonald will report.
McDonald exits United after a year. He was previously a communications leader for General Motors in a decade-long career there, and served a three-year stint at Fleishman-Hillard. He started out as a regional spokesman for Trans World Airlines in the mid-1990s.
