Weber Shandwick's online crisis communications work with American Airlines during an August 2010 bomb threat in San Francisco was among 11 Golden World Awards the firm won out of 27 honors given by the International PR Association in Lisbon June 17.
American Airlines flight AA24 from San Francisco to New York-JFK was grounded before takeoff and parked in a remote section of SF International Airport on Aug. 19 for two hours. The event unfolded in real-time as passengers tweeted and received information with and from the public and news outlets, and AA and WS staffers engaged with all the participants during the ordeal, drawing praise for its engaged response.
WS also picked up Golden Awards for work in Malaysia (Youth Asia), China (McDonald's, Pfizer), Spain (Opel), the U.K. (Abbot, EDF Energy) and Indonesia (Microsoft).
Edelman was No. 2. winner in the IPRA competition, picking up three Golden Awards for work with Starbucks, Adobe Systems, and a digital and traditional media campaign with the National Dairy Council, all in the U.S.
Turk Telekom was also involved in three awards as the company earned honors for creativity and consumer PR for its “No Place Like Home” campaign, while also winning with Capitol Ogilvy PR Worldwide of Turkey for its “Home Advantage” push.
IPRSA said it will unveil the Grand Prix winner at the group's annual summit Istanbul in October. The group said entries came from 50 countries were selected by judges representing 29 countries.
