The university on July 1 will exit the Mountain West Conference for atheltics and join the more prominent Pac-10 Conference, which will become the Pac-12 with the additions of Utah and the University of Colorado.
The high-profile appointment of Warren also follows the university’s hiring of Salt Lake City-based PR firm Method Communications in April after an RFP for media relations to raise its national profile through media relations.
Warren was at CA, the former Computer Associates, for eight years, heading external and internal communications for the past three. He was VP of marketing communications for the Coca-Cola Company and help top PR roles at MCI, ARCO and PriceWaterhouseCoopers.
Warren was also a former chief speechwriter for New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
A university spokesman said Warren was hired through a local search committee, but without the aid of a search firm.
The expanded Pac 12 conference, meanwhile, is said to be eyeing a sponsorship deal with companies like Google or Apple to “revolutionize” college sports broadcasting as it plans to unveil a league-operated TV network in August, according to a June 27 report in the San Jose Mercury News.
