National Public Radio has put the search to replace Ellen Weiss, who was senior VP-news, on hold pending the selection of a new CEO to succeed Vivian Schiller. Interim CEO Joyce Slocum believes “it’s only fair that the CEO have a key role” in selecting the news chief spot.
Also, the incoming news chief should have a handle on who is or her boss is to be, according to an email from Slocum that was obtained by The Hill. Slocum made the move after consulting with the executive search committee.
Weiss stepped down after the Juan Williams firing flap. He was let go after making a remark about his unease with airport sightings of people in dressed in Arabic attire. Williams was scooped up by Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News.
Schiller fell in the aftermath of the guerrilla media job on former fundraiser Ron Schiller conducted by conservative activist James O’Keefe.
NPR is fighting a battle in Congress to retain federal funding for its programming.
