Victoria Nuland is slated to be named the top spokeswoman for the State Dept., according to reports, to replace the departed Crowley, who resigned in March as the State Department’s PA chief and spokesman in the wake of his criticism over the Pentagon’s detention treatment of Pfc. Bradley Manning.
Nuland, known as “Toria,” is a career Foreign Service officer currently serving as special envoy for conventional forces in Europe. She was NATO ambassador for the U.S. during President George W. Bush’s second term and principal deputy national security advisor to Vice President Dick Cheney during the first term.
Foreign Policy reported May 16 that Nuland will not take Crowley’s former title of assistant secretary of State for public affairs. That role will go to former National Security Council spokeswoman and recent Crowley deputy Mike Hammer.
Yahoo! News’ “The Envoy” blog reported that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton could make Nuland’s appointment as early as Monday.
Nuland is married to Washington Post columnist Robert Kagan.
Crowley has taken a chair at Penn State Univ.
