The American Conservative Union, an influential D.C.-based lobbying and grassroots group, has brought in former press secretary to Florida Gov. Jeb Bush Kristy Campbell to direct its communications.
The group’s chairman, Al Cardenas, said the hire is part of its growth ahead of the 2012 election cycle that included recently appointments of a new executive director and PAC director. He dubbed Campbell “an experienced, respected conservative communicator.”
Campbell recently directed communications for Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum’s failed 2010 run for the governor’s office. She served Bush through the end of his term in 2007, later working PR for his two non-profit policy organizations.
The 30-year-old Campbell also handled Florida communications for Mitt Romney’s 2008 presidential bid.
The ACU was founded by William F. Buckley Jr. in 1964 after Barry Goldwater’s defeat by Lyndon Johnson for the White House.
Cardenas, in a preview of the conservative message for 2012, noted “staggering unemployment, unacceptable federal spending and debt and a perilous and ever-changing world” in announcing Campbell's hire.
