Whittaker Group has a three-month, $150K contract to promote investment in Malawi, which on April 7 named Joyce Banda as southern Africa’s first woman president.
She succeeded Bingu wa Mutharika who died April 5. Under his autocratic regime, the U.S. and other countries cut off aid to the landlocked nation.
The Voice of America reports that Banda is eager to normalize relations with the U.S. She made a phone call to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on April 10, urging her to restore U.S. Millennium Challenge Corp. funding to Malawi.
Whittaker’s contact calls for it to enhance the “brand of Malawi abroad as an attractive destination for investment and tourism.”
It slates outreach to U.S. officials and civil society groups and will forge partnerships in the development-oriented sectors.
