The Hong Kong Trade Development Council has hired Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld for a four-month government relations pact. The fee is set at $36K-a-month.
The agreement calls for Akin Gump to “protect, promote, assist and develop Hong Kong’s economic and trade interests in the U.S.” and to prevent or minimize the negative impact of measures that may be taken against Hong Kong and its trading partners.
The firm also will tackle policy issues regarding environmental protection, labor/human rights, public health and food safety.
HKTDC has the right to immediately terminate the contract if Akin Gump’s Tom Loeffler or Vic Fazio is unable to personally handle the account.
Loeffler is a former Republican Congressman from Texas who once served as an aide to President Jerry Ford and Texas Senator John Tower. Most recently, he was national chair for Jon Huntsman’s presidential bid.
Fazio is a former Democratic Congressman from California and co-managing partner of Clark & Weinstock’s Washington office.
Akin Gump opened an office in Hong Kong on Feb. 20.
