New Bedford

New Bedford, a vibrant city of 100K with a rich maritime history, wants a tourism and destination firm to help create a five-year marketing and tourism strategic plan and one-year implementation effort to attract visitors to the southeastern Massachusetts city.

Developed by Quakers, the city became a “beacon of tolerance, center for the abolitionist movement, major stop on the Underground Railroad, first free home of Frederick Douglass, and the largest whaling port in the world--making New Bedford one of the planet’s wealthiest cities,” according to its RFP.

A textile boom fueled the growth of ethnic neighborhoods and commercial fishing and processing succeeded whaling as New Bedford’s connection to the sea. The city has been the No. 1 commercial fishing port in the US for the past two decades.

New Bedford believes its beaches, history, museums, parks, arts and culture have “serious potential as a tourism destination for New England, and seeks to activate its assets to attract visitors from near and far to the city.”
