The Washington State Dept. of Health is seeking a firm to develop a health-centered communications campaign focused mainly on preventing/reducing cannabis and vaping use among people aged 12 through 20.

A secondary focus of the outreach will be to raise awareness among all adults of the health & safety risks associated with cannabis.

The Evergreen State legalized the recreational use of marijuana in 2012.

That move included a mandate for a media-based education campaign highlighting “medically and scientifically accurate information about the health and safety risks posed by marijuana use,” according to the RFP.

Washington’s PR partner also will target subgroups such as pregnant/breastfeeding women ages 21-40 to increase their understanding of the health consequences and dangers to an infant from a mother’s pot smoking.

It will seek to reduce the percentage of young people who have used cannabis at least one day in the last month in African-American, Latino/Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander, American Indian/Alaska Native and LGBQT communities.

The initial term of the contract will be from Sept. 1, 2021 through June 20, 2022. There will be options to renew for up to four one-year periods.

Responses are due Aug. 2. Interested firms must register at Washington's portal.
