Barrie tourism

Barrie, a city 55 miles north of Toronto located on the shores of Kempenfelt Bay, is looking for a firm to map out a sports tourism strategy.

The city of 150K people is one of Ontario’s best sports locales, hosting soccer, football, rugby, hockey, curling, figure skating and broomball at its facilities and fields every year.

Its four-season weather and geography makes it a great location for triathlons, hiking, cycling, fishing, swimming, sailing, kayaking, rowing, snowboarding, downhill and Nordic skiing.

Barrie’s tourism master plan targets sports as a primary driver of growth coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The RFP calls for a partner to “identify sports events, including sports business meeting and training camps for regional, provincial, national and international events for which the city is best suited to attract based on its current and projected asset mix, including both indoor and outdoor amenities, as well as natural assets.”

The firm also will identify opportunities that capitalize on the use of underutilized spaces and non-peak hours/seasons.

Responses are due August 24 electronically at Barrie's bidding portal.
