Joplin

Joplin, a Missouri city of more than 50K, wants to hire a firm to complete a "tourism venue needs assessment" plan to serve as a blueprint to attract more visitors.

The city serves as a regional hub for more than 250K people living in the southwestern corner of Missouri, southeast Kansas, and northeast Oklahoma.

Situated on the crossroads of Route 66, I-49, and I-44, Joplin boasts the largest hotel market in the area, with 23 properties and almost 2,000 rooms. There are more than 200 restaurants in the city.

The desired tourism assessment plan will outline "the strengths of the current market, potential for growth, and markets to avoid," according to the RFP.

It will spell out the strategic steps needed to position Joplin as a stronger group travel destination. Priorities, sustainability and funding options should support the assessment findings.

The desired deliverable will include a visual representation of market strengths, weaknesses and potential areas of growth in a simple visual format.

The final report will feature "case studies" on successful venues in markets similar to Joplin.

The studies will include information about how the project received initial support, obtained funding, governance structure and other pertinent data.

Joplin has never had a tourism assessment plan during the 33 years that it has engaged in destination marketing.
