Google vet Thomas Ranese has come on board as VP of global marketing at Uber in the aftermath of the company's decision to fire a third (400 people) of its marketing team to save money.

The 10-year Google exec most recently was VP-global hardware marketing. During his time at the company, he had also been global director of Google Brand Studio and head of global marketing strategy and operations.

Before coming to Google, Ranese was chief marketing officer at Empire State Development, the umbrella organization for New York's two principal economic development public-benefit corporations.

In his Uber job, he will be responsible for global marketing efforts for Uber’s products and businesses. Ranese will also lead the company’s brand, creative, research and regional marketing teams and report to Uber senior VP of marketing and PA Jill Hazelbaker.

“Thomas is a brilliant strategist and a beloved people manager with deep global marketing expertise,” Hazelbaker said in a statement.
