Carnival Corp. has named Heidi Barker to the newly created position of VP- corporate communications in its ethics and compliance department. She will join the cruise line company in March.
Based at Miami headquarters, Barker will focus on issues surrounding health, environment, safety, security, culture and training.
Carnival’s stock has been under pressure following Jan. 29 news that one of its ships in Italy is being investigated for potential cases of coronavirus.
The company previously announced that it suspended operations from Chinese ports from Jan. 25 to Feb. 4. “We also expect that travel restrictions will result in cancellations from Chinese fly-cruise guests booked on cruises embarking in ports outside China,” Carnival said in its 10-K filing.
Barker is moving to Carnival from Chicago-based Cleveland Avenue LLC, a food and beverage venture capital and consulting firm, where she was chief communications officer.
Before that, she was VP of global media relations and issues management for McDonald's Corporation and also spent 10 years as a producer for NBC News.
Barker will report to ethics and compliance officer Peter Anderson.

Senior-most communications executives in the Fortune 500 earned between $50,000 and $100,000 more this year than they did two years ago, according to a recent survey of chief communications officers.

The pressure is on PR pros to make sure corporate messaging remains clear and cohesive. Business jargon is an obstacle to achieving this goal.
In today's volatile world of constant disruption, the ability to offer reliability and dependability is more valuable than ever.
