Joele Frank is handling US media for Avianca, Latin America's third-biggest airline, which filed for Chapter 11 on May 10 due to the "unforeseeable impact of the COVID-19 pandemic."

The fleet of the Columbia flagship carrier has been grounded since mid-March, a move that wiped out 80 percent of its revenues.

"Avianca is facing the most challenging crisis in our 100-year history as we navigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic," said Anko van der Werff, CECO.

He said the grounding and a projected gradual recovery from the COVID-19 crisis made the Chapter 11 filing in US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York a "necessary step to address our financial challenges."

Avianca flies more than 30M people a year to 76 destinations in 27 countries. It has more than 21K workers.

Joele Frank, Wilkinson Brimmer Katcher's Leigh Parrish represents Avianca, while LLYC's Alejandra Aljure works in the Central American region.
