WPP has named former BT Group CEO Philip Jansen as non-executive director and chair-designate, effective Sept. 16.

He will succeed Roberto Quarta as non-executive chair on Jan. 1, and receive an annual fee of $740K.

Jansen headed the telecommunications giant from 2019 to February 2024, and spearheaded the effort to modernize and simplify the company.

Earlier, he was CEO of Worldpay, which filed the UK’s biggest fintech public offering. Beginning his career at Procter & Gamble, Jansen took on marketing jobs at Dunlop Slazenger and Telewest before moving into general management roles.

Angela Ahrendts, senior independent director of WPP, said Jansen has a valuable blend of experience, from leading technology and consumer goods companies to transforming large, complex organizations and creating significant value for shareholders. “As a former marketer he understands our business, its clients and the opportunities ahead of us,” she added.

Quarta, who had a nine-year run at WPP, helped guide it through a messy management succession, COVID-19 crisis, and a financial restructuring.
