The Korea Aerospace Administration, which launched May 30 to oversee space policy and to nurture space-related businesses, has tapped former NASA executive John Lee as its US representative.

He is to handle outreach to NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; represent KASA at industry conferences and scientific forums; and interact with aerospace companies, universities and think tanks.

Lee has more than 30 years of space experience, and worked at Goddard Space Flight Center, NASA’s top space research lab, until 2021.

"KASA will usher in a new space era by cultivating experts while intensively supporting the aerospace industry ecosystem and fostering challenging and innovative R&D," Korea president Yoon Suk Yeol said in unveiling KASA.

The Administration will oversee Korea’s aggressive plan to land on Mars by 2045. The country has allocated $72B for that program.

Korea also is targeting a robotic lunar landing in 2032.
