Liberty Mutual Group Inc. has inked a pact with government relations firm Crossroads Strategies for Washington representation on a slew of tax-related issues as they affect the insurance industry.

The insurance giant has tapped CRS for matters related to U.S.-China bilateral trade negotiations; implementation of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act; international regulatory matters and international trade negotiations; The Transparent Insurance Standards Act (H.R.5143); and matters related to reforming the U.S. tax code, according to lobbying registration documents filed in September.
A six-person team manages the Liberty Mutual account, including Todd Weiss, who was previously an aide to former Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA); Elizabeth Hart, who was chief to staff to former Delaware Democratic Congressman (and now Governor) John Carney, and also worked for Democratic Reps. Baron Hill (IN) and Melissa Bean (IL); Mathew Lapinski, a former lobbyist for the Property and Casualty Insurers Association of America; Jason Van Pelt, former legislative director to Congressman Ed Whitfield (R-KY); Wally Burnett, former deputy assistant secretary for Budget and Programs at the Department of Transportation and legislative director to Senator Ted Stevens (R-AK); and Hunter Moorhead, former policy advisor to Mississippi Senator Thad Cochran and a White House staffer during the George W. Bush’s administration.
Liberty Mutual is the fourth-largest property and casualty company in the U.S. The Boston-based insurer operates in 30 countries and had assets of $122 billion as of Jan 2016.
