PR counselor Mike Paul told CNBC on Monday that HP deserves at least a 9 out of 10 for its handling of CEO Mark Hurd's ouster over the weekend.

"They've made big mistakes themselves in the past and maybe they were a little afraid of being behind the eight ball and waiting a little longer, doing more of an investigation," he said, before offering some advice that he would've given the company.

Paul appeared with civil and crisis management attorney Joel Thompson.
