Ferry, who has recently been running her own shop consulting higher education clients, is set to join the institution Aug. 22 in the newly created role as Scripps seeks to build national and regional recognition.
Ferry was a VP in Fleishman-Hillard’s Los Angeles public affairs unit, joining in 1999 after a stint as director of corporate political affairs at BP’s Arco gasoline unit.
She was press secretary and communications director for a year in 1999 for Locke, who recently finished a term as Commerce Secretary and was named U.S. Ambassador to China.
Scipps president Lori Bettison-Varga said Ferry is charged with” taking the strong reputation Scripps College enjoys among those who know us and leading her team to create new opportunities to build our reputation among additional important stakeholders in Southern California and across the country.”
Her mandate includes PR, media outreach, social media, websites, publications and other marketing efforts.
Earlier PR stints included Nordstrom and Cinnabon.
Scripps, one of seven institutions known as the Claremont Colleges, was founded in 1926 by Ellen Browning Scripps, half-sister of newspaper magnate E.W. Scipps. It currently enrolls about 950 students.
