RASPBERRY DIES AT 76 |
|
By Kevin McCauley
William Raspberry, a syndicated columnist for the Washington Post, died today in his home in D.C. He was 76 and suffered from prostate cancer.
Raspberry wrote the Post column from 1966 to 2005, focusing on civil rights, poverty, education, drug abuse and the Washington power structure.
In 1994, he won a Pulitzer Prize and a lifetime achievement award from the National Assn. of Black Journalists.
The NABJ lauded Raspberry for his “clarity of thought and insistence ion speaking the truth as he sees it—even when others disagree.”
He began his newspaper career at The Indianapolis Recorder, a weekly paper for African-Americans, and was hired in 1962 at the Post as a teletypist. |

Joe Honick, GMA International Ltd (7/17):
Bill Raspberry was far more than a voice only for racial matters. He was an outstanding journalist from all angles, period!...and one of the most ethical as well. Those coming up in journalism would do well to study his work.
Greg Hazley (7/17):
Excellent observations from Bill: "After writing more than 5,000 opinion columns, Mr. Raspberry said in a speech at the University of Virginia in 2006, he had learned two important lessons. The first, he said, 'is that in virtually every public controversy, most thoughtful people secretly believe both sides. ... The second, which has kept my confidence from turning into arrogance, is that it is entirely possible for you to disagree with me without being, on that account, either a scoundrel or a fool.'"
Mike Paul, the Reputation Doctor®, MGP & Associates PR (7/17):
He will be truly missed. A strong soldier for justice in his writing and in his spirit. RIP my friend. |
