The Washington-based trade group for U.S. charter schools, which is under new leadership, is bringing in Dept. of Education public affairs staffer and former journalist David Hoff to head communications.

The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools said Hoff will join the organization on Oct. 9 as VP for communications and marketing to serve as spokesman for NAPCS and the “public charter school movement.”
Nina Rees, a Bush administration education official and former advisor to Vice President Dick Cheney, took the reins as NAPCS president and CEO in June. Debbie Robinson left the VP/comms. post at NACPCS last year to become senior communications officer for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Hoff exits the Dept. of Education as deputy assistant secretary for communication development, handling speechwriting, digital media and message development. He was previously a writer for Education Week and Education Daily.
The NACPCS last month tapped Gina Mahony, a former aide to Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), as senior VP for federal affairs.
The group says more than 1.6 million students in 39 states and D.C. now attend the nearly 5,000 charter schools, which are publicly funded and privately run.
