San Diego-based public affairs firm Southwest Strategies LLC has been hired to provide communications and community outreach support for ongoing international trade policy developments between the U.S. and Japan.

Southwest will serve as a subcontractor to Sacramento, CA-based lobbying firm KP Public Affairs to provide consulting services in the form of education and outreach to San Diego stakeholders and government officials regarding trade issues involving Japan.

Japan is one of 11 Pacific Rim nations taking part in landmark international trade agreement the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which serves to update trade standards by eliminating tariffs, setting new environmental regulations, updating rules on e-commerce and providing new protections for corporations’ intellectual property.

The historic trade pact, which was formally signed in February, will enter into force after it has been ratified by all participating countries. In the U.S., Congress may vote on the issue as early as this summer.

According to Foreign Agents Registration Acts documents, Southwest will provide messaging and materials development, will conduct outreach to key audiences and will analyze and provide feedback on public awareness on proposed international trade agreements.

The March contract calls for Southwest to receive $10,000 in fees for these services.

The pact was signed by Southwest CEO Jennifer Wahl.
