What follows may well seem strange to most, but it does have history. With all these displaced folks from everywhere, there are some ideas. One is the draft. Before reaching for your blaster, take a moment. As a collector of media, I happened to have a Harper's Magazine from 1918 in which there is a lengthy feature about the thousands of immigrants from throughout Europe who participated in America's first draft. As it happens, one of them was my late father. The Army officer who authored the piece was way out of sync with people of the day and was working out means to insure these thousands of members of the army learned at least basic English and move on to working English. It was working as he wrote.
Altogether, according to the author, there were 243,000 aliens registered in the first draft. More recently, G. Bush authorized recruitment of illegals and ex felons for the manpower-short action against Iraq.
So for all those bigots (including Trump and Company) who see all these folks as "baddies" or worse, it might not hurt to provide this kind of challenge. After all, few argued about our importing 1500 Nazis and their families to rescue our space program and continue to flourish with their gift of the American dream.
