AIG has tapped Goldman Sachs marketing chief David May as corporate chief marketing officer as the company continues to burnish its image since its federal bailout in 2008.

May reports to senior VP of corporate communications Christina Pretto at AIG. He exits Goldman after more than a decade handling marketing communications for the banking giant.

Bloomberg, which first reported May's hire, said corporate marketing will focus on growing sales, expanding distribution channels and "deepening the trust our clients hold in us."

AIG launched an ad campaign earlier last year touting is payback of the more than $182B bailout by Uncle Sam at the height of the financial crisis. After suspending all lobbying amid criticism over its PR spending in 2008, the company returned to the lobbying scene in January.

Last fall, AIG brought in Citigroup's Jon Diat as its primary corporate spokesman. That followed the 2009 hire of Pretto from Citigroup to head corporate communications.
