A union for thousands of retired employees of the bankrupt city of Detroit is receiving PR support from a Bloomfield Hills, Mich., firm close to the auto industry.

detroitAutoCom Associates is representing the Detroit Retired City Employees Association as the group presses its interest amid the Motor City's bankruptcy proceedings. The union's law firm, Lippitt O'Keefe, which also reps the Retired Detroit Police and Fire Fighters Assn., is a client of AutoCom, led by Ford communications alum Larry Weis.

Current union employees and the city's pension fund, along with the retirees, are challenging Detroit's bankruptcy in court with a goal of negotiating outside of the constraints of Chapter 9 bankruptcy.

Detroit's obligations top $18.5B.

Abernathy MacGregor Group and Duffey & Petroskey are handling PR assignments for the city and its emergency manager, respectively.
