MacKenzie Partners, the well-known proxy solicitation and shareholder communications firm, has opened a Washington office, noting the continued convergence of Wall Street and the capital.

Executive VP Laurie Connell, a seven-year veteran of the firm and former IR director at MCI -- MacKenzie worked the Verizon-MCI merger in 2006 -- heads the outpost.

Dan Burch, chairman of MacKenzie, said the D.C. area has grown as a home for major public companies and leading voices on corporate governance, in addition to being the base for regulatory bodies.

He noted increased shareholder activism and activist investors, as well as the Dodd-Frank Act, in setting up the new office.

The D.C. office is the firm's fifth, joining its New York headquarters and outposts in Los Angeles, Palo Alto and London.

Among other assignments this proxy season, MacKenzie is currently working with oil giant Hess Corp. as it woos shareholders amid a proxy fight over its plan to "transform" into an exploration and production company.
