Hill+Knowlton Strategies and O'Neill and Assocs. are working to restore the battered image of Washington's Metrorail subway system.

metroThe Washington Post reported March 9 that a smoke incident of Jan 12, which left one person dead, has tattered the image of the operation.

The victim's family has filed a $50M suit against Metro, which also has been struggling to find a new CEO.

The National Transportation Safety Board said a preliminary investigation blamed faulty tunnel fans for the smoke tragedy. Two days of public hearings are slated for June.

A Metro staffer said the crisis communications expertise of H+K and O'Neill will help forge a reputation management communication.

O'Neill, which was founded by the son of former Speaker of the House Tip O'Neill is the home of Peter Goelz, former managing director of the NTSB.

H+K has been doing being media relations for the railroad.
