Charlotte Kelly Veal, 83, former PR director of Hearst Magazines, died Sept. 14 in New York.

She also had major PR posts at Ladies’ Home Journal, Woman’s Day, Esquire, NBC-TV, Benton & Bowles, and the D’Arcy and McCann ad agencies.

Her philanthropic interests included serving for three years as director of public information for Odyssey House. She was also active in the Women’s Forum, Ad Women of New York and New York Women in Communications, where she was a board member.

She received a Matrix Award of NYWIC in 1983.

Born in Manhattan Beach, Calif., she initially worked for Foote, Cone & Belding in Los Angeles and was brought to New York by producer David O. Selznick.

She married Prudential Insurance ad VP Speed Veal in 1984 after her first marriage, to publishing executive Page Thompson Sr., ended in divorce. She is survived “by many lifelong friends,” said her death notice.
