The PR muscle of Pope Francis will be on full display this week with the June 18 release of his first major encyclical or teaching letter dealing with the environment and global poor.

pope francisThere has been a ton of press, anticipating that the document will firmly plant the Pontiff in the camp of the 97 percent of the scientific community that believes human activity is the primary cause of global warming. Of, course it will. Francis trained as a chemist.

Some conservative commentators fear that Francis has been make a captive of what they consider radical environmentalists.

Others say Francis, a Jesuit, will use the letter to criticize capitalism. They believe the Pope should focus on issues with a more spiritual bent. That's baloney.

The Catholic Church is not a newcomer when it comes environmental concern. The New York Times noted on June 14 that Francis' predecessors, Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI, wrote about the role that industrial pollution has in destroying the environment.

It's the worldwide PR popularity of Francis, the first Pope from the Americas, which now has the Church front and center in the concern over the environment.

The Pontiff also enjoys impeccable timing as global concern grows over income inequality and sustainability.

Francis' PR rock star image will win support for global action on the global warming front. He's a blessing to greenies everywhere--no matter their religion or lack of.
